Daniel John Gadd: Rosemma
November 9 – December 1, 2013
Artist Reception: Saturday, Nov 16, 5:30 – 8 PM
JAG MODERN is proud to present Rosemma, by the artist Daniel John Gadd. Rosemma, titled for the street where Gadd spends his summers on Long Beach Island, New Jersey, presents a series of paintings and objects that document a young man’s experience with identity, memory and space. Raw in material and physicality, the painting depict bathers on the shore line, landscapes of the bay, portraits of lovers, friends and his daughter.
Gadd has always painted that which is closely associated to him, but more recently has sought to move further away from direct representation of his subjects and more toward exploring the physical properties of the materials. To do this, Gadd employs new materials into his process such as string, glitter, collage, nails, organic matter and glass, while also experimenting with carving of wooden surfaces and three dimensional construction on wood and canvas. By allowing these paintings and objects to grow more organically, a connection between painter, painting and material is engendered. In addition, by transposing these familiar and familial images to paint, Gadd can move past nostalgia, circumventing time in general, making the paintings more than just an image and object; thus, at once, Gadd creates a visual record of his own life, while creating unique paintings that stand alone as works of art.
Daniel John Gadd was born in New Jersey in 1986 and currently lives and works in Montclair, NJ. He holds a B.F.A from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. His work is in numerous collections around the world and previous shows include: Octet, Codes and Contexts in Recent Art, Pera Museum, Istanbul; A Small Embassy of Living Painters, Appels Gallery, Amsterdam; and most recently, Daniel John Gadd: Paintings, Daniel Cooney Fine Art, NY. Gadd will be showing with JAG MODERN at the Aqua Art Fair in Miami, December 4-8. A full color catalogue of work will accompany the show with an essay by the artist Farrell Brickhouse.
